Pregnant during cold season? Your immune system probably feels a little wonky and your nose gets more stuffed up than it did pre-baby. Does it feel like all your usual cold remedy go-tos say “not safe for pregnancy” on it? Contrary to popular belief, there are actually quite a few safe remedies at your disposal when you’re pregnant and dealing with cold and flu season.
First there are the no-brainers, yet these tend to be the hardest ones for us to buckle down and accomplish:
REST— The very second you start feeling the sickness fatigue, start laying low and take a warm Epsom salt bath.
HYDRATE— Force yourself to drink water, broth and herbal teas. If you start running low, your baby’s amniotic fluid and your own kidneys will be taxed.
And now for the FUN STUFF! These are all remedies I feel comfortable using in pregnancy and beyond!
I take a tincture of pregnancy-safe, alcohol-free Echinacea from Herb Pharm. I also up my vitamin C, keeping the max around 2,000mg/day. And did you know you can make a tea out of a few raw garlic cloves crushed into boiling water with pure lemon juice added?! Garlic is a powerful and natural bactericide. Just don’t forget to add some honey to make it palatable!
Grab some nasal spray from Xlear (made from Xylitol and saline) to clear all that weird pregnancy congestion that plagues so many of us for weeks on end!
Oriental Herb Co. makes some incredibly effective Chinese herbal blends, safe for pregnancy and nursing. Cold Snap comes in capsules and totally nips all the colds I’ve started getting right in the bud!
And the best part? They’re totally accessible and won’t break the bank! I’ve seen ALL of these suggestions sold at places like Sprouts, WholeFoods, and of course on Amazon, where they are all linked in the photos below. Grab some to keep on hand today!
